1. How to prevent the current sensor from being magnetized?
Depending on the type of sensor and the magnetic material used, there is an additional measurement offset caused by the residual magnetic flux (remanence) of the magnetic core, called "magnetic bias". Its value depends on the magnetization of the core and reaches a maximum value after the magnetic circuit is saturated. Magnetization can occur: after high current overloads and due to power supply interruption (or undervoltage).
The magnetic bias caused by magnetization will slowly cancel:
1. In the natural state, it will slowly recover according to different magnetic materials (this is a very slow process).
2. By degaussing the sensor, or passing a suitable current with the opposite polarity to the primary current on the primary side, or a dedicated degaussing cycle, its initial performance can also be restored.
2. How to demagnetize?
Degaussing is required to remove the magnetic bias. During the degaussing cycle, a low-frequency AC source is used to make the magnetic core pass through the entire B-H hysteresis loop, and then the excitation is gradually reduced to bring the B-H operating point back to the origin. A minimum of 5 cycles at full scale is required, and then the excitation is gradually reduced by no more than 4% per cycle, 30 cycles or 500ms at 60Hz.
For closed-loop sensors, an additional coil must be required to ensure that the compensation coil does not counteract the degaussing effect. Alternatively, partial degaussing of the magnetic core can be achieved by supplying an appropriate signal of opposite polarity. The difficulty in doing this is determining the exact magnitude and duration to obtain satisfactory results. Given a defined application, the required values can be determined empirically and corrected if necessary.
